SAFETY STATISTICS
FOR CORONADO
Coronado is one of the top travel destinations in the world, and we're lucky to call it home. This community is fortunate enough to have a number of wonderful residents who are passionate about preserving and protecting our island's history.
We're a unique island where we have 3 naval installations employing 14,000+ personnel. On top of this, we have 3 world-renowned resorts which encourages our 3.5 million visitors annually to our great city. In the summertime, during large holidays like 4th of July, we see swells of up to 100,000 people a day.
With such a bustling tourism industry and a strong community, we've got a few limitations. Our island only has 2 points of entry. With 10 high rise structures, one 5-story hospital, and 1.5 miles of beach head. That means that our firefighters are called upon quite often to protect and serve our community for a number of different emergencies at any given time.
But did you know....
Coronado Firefighters have 10 emergency responders on shift every single day.
1 division chief, 1 paramedic ambulance, 1 fire truck with 3 firefighters at Station 36. 1 fire truck with 4 firefighters at Station 37.
That's your coverage in the event of any emergency.
Coronado Firefighters answered that many calls in 2022.
Coronado Firefighters have seen an 87% increase in calls compared to 2005. Our calls for service increased 7.6% from 2021 to 2022.
Increase in medical aid calls in 2022 compared to 2021.
Coronado Firefighters saw a dramatic increase in calls made and responded to in just one year. The more calls we respond to, the more your local firefighters are taxed. With a limited crew, we're on call more often than not, relying on other nearby agencies.
There are only 2 points of access to Coronado - the Bridge and the Strand.
With only 2 points of access, we're limited to how we get aide, resources, and support in times of crisis or high need. If one entry closes, we're even more at risk. That's why it's important to keep our stations well staffed, well equipped, and well prepared for everything.
Community Education & Outreach
We offer programs designed to educate our community about fire safety and prevention, and emergency preparedness. Our goal is to equip every citizen with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent emergencies and take appropriate action when they occur.
Firefighter Involvement & Volunteering
Our firefighters are not just your emergency responders, but also your neighbors. We regularly participate in local events, support charities, and engage with schools and organizations to foster a stronger, safer community.
Partnerships
We are proud to collaborate with local, regional, and national partners to expand our reach and impact. These partnerships help us provide better services and engage in larger community initiatives.
Supported Community Foundations & Non-Profits
San Diego Burn Institute
The burn institute is our largest beneficiary. We have two major fundraisers we support. The largest event we host is our annual spaghetti dinner, raising approximately 10k each year. The Hotel Del Coronado is one of our largest and oldest donors contributing all the food served. Donors also include the Marriott Hotel in Coronado, & Cal AM Water.
Our second largest event participated in is the San Diego Burn Institute Firefighter Demolition Derby hosted at the San Diego County Fair every year. Annual contributions range from $1k to $4k annually. Top donors include: Batta / Fulkerson Law Group, Geico Insurance, The Bar Method in Carmel Mtn., Nicky Rottens in Coronado, Industrial Metal Supply, Dave’s Auto Wreaking.
We regularly donate and attend their annual Spirit of Courage award ceremony.

In every fire and emergency medical system there must be a balance between demand and operability. The advent of the automatic and mutual aid systems improved the allocation of service through the sharing of resources between fire and EMS agencies. But when that system becomes unbalanced, the resulting strain can put burden a supporting agency when resources are already thin...

Rum cakes are one way to firemen’s hearts in Coronado, as each Christmas they receive the tasty treats from long-time resident Robbins Kelly.
